What's going on?!
There is a new version of the app available, which you need to login to in order to activate your new account. The previous version of the app is no longer processing new releases.
The app has been completely rebuilt and new features added, including support for multiple playlists that you can filter new releases into. You can set up notifications of new releases for whole labels, the upcoming releases section is back up and running, and there is also a new web version of the app, accessible here at www.crabhands.com.
How do I use the new version of the app?
You just need to update the app to the new version on the Play/App Store and then login, using your Spotify login details (or via Google or Facebook) as normal, and there'll be a brief set up process as your new account is created and your active artists and account data brought across from the old version.
Once logged in you will be asked for your email address. This is just required so that I can contact you regarding your free trial and your subscription, if you choose to subscribe.
Why has a subscription been introduced?
crabhands was launched in 2017, and has always been free to install and use. However, over the years the running costs for hosting the backend that powers the app have steadily increased, and I simply cannot continue to cover these myself. A small subscription has become the only option to keep the app running. I do apologise for this, I understand there are far too many subscriptions in the world already.
With this I am now back actively working on the app, adding features and improving it. Hopefully you enjoy the new version and find the subscription (which is 1.99 GBP/EUR/USD per month or 20 GBP/EUR/USD per year) reasonable value.
This is all very sudden. Why no announcement of this change?
I apologise if you were not informed of this change, and the app just suddenly stopped updating for you. The architecture of the app had become outdated, to the point where I couldn't release updates to it. Some notifications have been sent out where possible but with these largely broken on the old app and with no email address stored against users, or the permission to access these via Spotify, I generally had no method of making an announcement.
Will I get a free trial?
Yes, when you first login your 14 day free trial will be started so that you can try out the new version and see if you want to subscribe. If you do then you'll just need to login to the web version of the app to set up your subscription.
Do I need to use the new web version of the app?
If you prefer to continue using the mobile app that's fine, all of the functionality is available in both platforms of the app. To subscribe and manage your subscription however you will need to use the web app.
What has happened to the festivals section?
Unfortunately the data source for this became unavailable some time ago so this section of the app has laid dormant since then, as you'd probably noticed! So for now it has been removed while an alternative source is found - I hope to have it back up and running in the near future.
